Welcome to the 2011 GFC Football Season!

The 2011 GFC Football Season started today and it’s a little over 4 weeks before the first game of the year.

Below is an article about proper hydratration.

The Role of Electrolytes and Carbohydrates in Sports Nutrition
by Dennis Loney

The primary nemesis during athletic performance might not be the person
you’re squaring off against, but dehydration. During a prolonged,
intense workout, the loss of fluids can reach one to three quarts an
hour, and if you don’t supply what your body demands (fluids), your
body will be unable to cool itself. Ill-functioning nerve pathways and
an increase in heart rate may lead to heat exhaustion or a potentially
fatal heat stroke.

That said, are sports drinks laden with electrolytes and carbohydrates
better than water at replacing fluids lost during exercise? First let’s
examine the role electrolytes and carbohydrates play in the body’s
chemistry.

Electrolytes are nutrients that affect the fluid balance in our bodies
and are necessary for our nerves and muscles to function. When
electrolytes dissolve, they produce ions that are necessary to carry
electrons from one electrode to another. The more soluble a substances
is, the stronger the electrolyte.

Sodium and potassium are the most common electrolytes added to the
ever-increasing variety of sports drinks. While electrolyte replacement
may be beneficial during rigorous activity lasting longer than two
hours, electrolyte infusion is generally not needed during short bursts
of exercise. Since sweat is composed of 99% water and less than 1%
electrolytes, water is more than sufficient to restore your body’s
normal fluid and electrolyte levels.

The other ingredient sports drink makers tout in advertising campaigns
are carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are the preferred energy source for
our bodies and are basically comprised of sugars and starches. Our
bodies break down carbohydrates into glucose and glycogen that the
blood carries to cells to be used as energy for our working muscles.
The body consumes glucose for fast energy and resorts to glycogen
stored in our muscles for sustaining energy. If glycogen stores are
depleted, the body will resort to protein for its fuel, which causes
your body to become fatigued and increases the need for rest and
recovery.

Although research has demonstrated that rehydrating with a sports drink
that includes electrolytes and carbohydrates helps muscles restore
glycogen reserves more efficiently than water if your exercise lasts
for more than 90 minutes, simply drinking enough water before, during,
and after a short workout will restore bodily fluids and electrolyte
levels. In fact, sports drinks high in carbohydrates (more than 15 to
18 grams per 8 ounces) could delay the absorption of water and cause
dehydration, cramps, nausea, or diarrhea. Also, unused carbohydrates
will be stored as fat.

Whether you use sports drinks or water to hydrate may turn out to be a
matter of preference, but the important thing is to stay hydrated,
especially during hot summer months. Dehydration may also lead to poor
performance and fatigue.

Hydration Recommendation (Water should be consumed more than sports
drinks. Do not drink just sports drinks. Drink water for more than 60%
of the fluids you drink to replenish your body )

1. It is recommended to consume 16 ounces of water or sports drink, 2
hours before activity.

2. 8-12 ounces of water or sports drink, 15 minutes before activity.

3. During exercise, you should consume 5-10 ounces of water or sports
drink, every 15 to 20 minutes with a minimum of 20 ounces per hour.

4. After you’re finished for the day, consume 24 ounces of water or
sports drink, for each pound of body weight lost after exercise.

2011 GFC Spring Jamboree

Holy Spirit (green) scrimmages against North Georgia

The GFC Spring Scrimmage was held Saturday at the home field of the Georgia Force. Five GFC teams (East Atlanta, Freedom Academy, Georgia Force, Holy Spirit Prep and North Georgia) participated and one thing was clear after watching over 3 hours of competition, this season will be very interesting. Very interesting because any of these 5 teams could win the GFC Championship and we haven’t seen what the other GFC teams have yet! The defenses ruled the day, but that is to be expected as teams only have had a short period of time to put their offense together. However, every team showed they could move the ball and have good talent. Also, with a month of practice in August, we will see a season full of close games and plenty of surprises!

__________________________________________

This season the GFC will be divided into two divisions, East and West.

The East teams are the Augusta Prep Cavaliers, Anderson (SC) Cavaliers, East Atlanta Mustangs from Conyers, Georgia Force from Sugar Hill and Holy Spirit Prep Cougars from Atlanta.

The West teams include Christian Heritage Lions from Dalton, Freedom Academy Cowboys (Huntsville, AL), HSD Panthers from Paulding county and North Georgia Falcons from Canton/Cumming.

2011 GFC Preseason Standings

Robert Davis (#50 in white plays inside linebacker) is a former Falcon player and John Bodin (#65 in red plays guard on offense) is a former Mustang player. Shown above at G-day (Georgia Bulldogs spring game last Saturday). Congrats to both of them! Just shows that playing in the GFC prepares you to play at the highest level of college football.

Falcons Michael Jefferson runs for a 45 yard touchdown

North Georgia 24 Christian Heritage 20

It was another thrilling football game where the second half saw the lead change four times and at the end of the game, the Lions had 3 chances from the 13 yard line, but couldn’t get into the end zone before the clock ran out.

The Falcons missed on a field goal early in the first quarter. Late in the first quarter, Falcon defensive tackle Josh Pack recovered the first of three fumbles at the 39 yard line. Nine plays later at the 8 minute mark of the 2nd quarter, Brett Snyder kick a 23 yard field goal to give the Falcons a 3-0 lead. On their next possession, the Falcons went 80 yards in 4 plays scoring on a Michael Jefferson 45 yard run. Snyder’s extra point kick made it 10-0 Falcons with 3:40 to go in the half. Christian Heritage took the kickoff and drove 39 yards scoring on a 1 yard run by Daniel Pierce. Jang’s kick was good to make the score 10-7. The Falcons move the ball to the 32 but time ran out and it was halftime.

The Falcons took the second half kickoff and drove to the 24, but a field goal attempt was no good and the Lions took over. Eight plays later Pierce connected with Mason Sikes for a 5 yard touchdown pass. The kick was no good, but the Lions now had the lead at 13-10 with 3:57 to go in the 3rd quarter.

The Falcons responded by driving 73 yards in 14 plays using up almost 8 minutes of the game and scoring on a Michael Jefferson 5 yard run. The extra point by Snyder was good. Falcons had the lead again at 17-13 with 8 minutes to go in the game. The Lions took the kickoff and marched 59 yards in 4 plays scoring on a Pierce to Wilson pass of 25 yards. The extra point kick was good and the Lions had the lead back at 20-17 with 5:47 left in the game.

The Falcons took the kickoff and drove 78 yards in 11 plays with Jefferson again scoring from 6 yards out. This drive had a big gain of 27 yards on a Tim Howard to Brett Snyder pass that put the Falcons in scoring position. The extra point kick was good and the lead was now 24-20 in favor of the Falcons with 1:17 to go.

Christian Heritage had one last drive in them and were successful in moving the ball down the field to the 8 yard line by throwing the ball and completing 3 passes of 10, 13 and 17 yards, however, they couldn’t complete the last 3 passes from the 13 yard line and the game ended when the last pass was knocked down by the Falcon’s Riley Davis.

The Falcons had 365 total offensive yards while Christian Heritage had 262. Both teams came in averaging over 30 points a game on offense.

Unity Christian 33 HSD Panthers 13

The Unity Christian Lions pulled off the biggest upset of the GFC season beating the HSD Panthers for their first victory of the season.

East Atlanta 12 SC Titans 10

Georgia Force 22 Holy Ground 0

In a great defensive battle between two of the top teams, the North Georgia Falcons beat the Georgia Force in 2 overtimes by the score of 7-0. The Force played most of the game without starting quarterback Matt Hardin, who was injured in the second quarter. Neither team seemed to be able to get untracked offensively because of the tough defense that was being played. The Falcons came up with an interception by Riley Davis near the goal line to stop the best Force drive of the day. Christian Jones had another interception to stop another drive. It was also Jones who intercepted a pass in the first overtime to stop the Force.

The Force defense kept the Falcons offense in check all day as well. In the first overtime, the Falcons tried a field goal which was wide right. However, in the second overtime, on 3rd and 6 from the 14, Tim Howard connected with Riley Davis for the Falcons touchdown. Brett Snyder added the extra point to make it 7-0. The Force took over and drove down the field, however, on 4th on 5 from the 7 yard line they came up short by about a foot so the Falcons won the game and moved into the Championship where they will play the Christian Heritage Lions on Saturday, Nov 14th at 2:00 at Riverwood High Stadium in Sandy Springs.

THIS ARTICLE IS FROM THE DALTON CITIZEN NEWSPAPER:

Christian Heritage has earned its chance to win back-to-back league titles.

The Lions defeated Dominion Christian, 56-20, in the Glory For Christ Football League semifinals on Saturday at Riverwood High School in Sandy Springs and will play the North Georgia Falcons — who beat the Georgia Force, 7-0, in the day’s other semifinal — at 2 p.m. this Saturday at Riverwood.

Coach Mike Vaden said his Lions (9-1) executed their game plan well against Dominion Christian (7-3), a team they beat 27-12 during the regular season.

“We played really hard,” Vaden said. “Offensively, we moved the ball and, defensively, we contained their speed, which was our main concern heading into the game.”

The Lions jumped out to a 14-0 lead early in the first quarter on a 1-yard touchdown run from Daniel Pierce and a 25-yard pass from Pierce to Mason Sikes. But before the period ended, Dominion Christian blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown and, after a two-point conversion run, the score was 14-8.

Christian Heritage pulled away in the second quarter with three scores of 2 or fewer yards from Terrell Wilson, Pierce and Ethan Turnmire.

Pierce’s scoring run came on a 98-yard drive after a goal-line stand by the Lions defense.

“It seems like after Pierce’s score,” said Vaden, “that really took the life out of them.”

The Lions then scored twice in the third quarter on a 9-yard run for Pierce and a 23-yard pass from Pierce to Sikes, while Turnmire added a 4-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Dominion scored on a 5-yard pass in the third and a 27-yard run in the fourth.

Lions kicker Nick Jang was 6-for-6 on extra point kicks before leaving the game with an ankle sprain suffered while playing defensive back. In Jang’s absence, Cody Stansell converted two extra-point kicks.

Vaden said he expects Jang will be available to kick in next week’s game against the Falcons.

Last season, the Lions went 12-0 and won the league title with a 33-7 victory against the Crown Knights. In order for Christian Heritage to defend its title, the Lions must beat the Falcons (9-2), who handed them their only loss of the season, 13-6, last month in Dalton.

Vaden is hoping for better circumstances and a different outcome in the rematch.

“It’s going to be tough,” he said. “We’re praying not to have to play in the mud like we did the last game. The key to us next week will be making sure we don’t turn the ball over and taking advantage of every opportunity given to us.”
